MADELEINE VIONNET/3

This modeling technique would revolutionize the way the female body was perceived which, in the first decades of the 1900’s, had already undergone various modification with the abandoning of the corset and the custom of already practicing sports at a young age.

The technique of the oblique cut is still widely-used even today, for it permits the creation of close-fitting clothing, making the most of its elastic potential and thus enhancing the female form. The famous flowing mermaid dresses which were worn by Hollywood divas in the 1930’s and 1940’s are surely a tangible example of the contribution Vionnet has made to fashion.

Even today many fashion designers are inspired by Vionnet’s creations, but her elaborate technique is almost impossible to reproduce due to the fact that Madeleine Vionnet experimented and created her clothing on a mannequin scaled down to half, to then recreate the result in the true measurements of a mannequin.
