MADELEINE VIONNET/2

Returning to Paris she came into contact with Madame Gerber, one of three sisters who headed the couture house Callot Soeurs, at the time one of the most well-known in France.

Having gained experience, she founded her own couture house in 1912, which met the haute couture clothing requirements of the European nobility and the upper middle class, as well as the south American large landowners (to the point that she described the Cuban sugarcane  producers’ wives as her best clients in the early 1900’s).

Her home, where she stored her manufacture, was subsequently used as a fashion museum .

Shortly before her death, she was interviewed by Bruce Chatwin; a retelling of this meeting may be found in What am I doing here?  by the selfsame author, an excerpt of Vogue, for whom Chatwin worked at the time.

Madeleine Vionnet’s most important contribution to fashion was the innovative use of the oblique cut, that is with a 45° diagonal in relation to the grain and warp.
