THE CHEYENNE

The Cheyenne are a tribe from the northern Plains.

Speaking the Algonquian tongue, but a search for their origins leads to the Great Lakes region, from whence they were forced to move, by the Chippewa and the Lakota, to lands further south.

They had two types of dwellings: the wintery “wigwam”, constructed with robust poles planted in the ground, with curved extremities and tied at the top.

This was the structure which was then covered with dried grass on which mud was placed to seal the holes. This was then in turn covered with bark or woven reeds; the summery type consisted in small tents made of poles covered in skins or bark.

Great hunters of buffalo and antelope, as where all the tribes of the plains, they markedly changed their customs with the introduction of the horse they became nomads, excellent horsemen living in tepees.

The tribe was divided into two groups: the northern Cheyenne, who practically merged with the Sioux, so much so that they took on their customs and language, the Southern which united with the Arapaho.
