Nez Perce Warrior, 1877
The picture depicts a Nez Perce warrior at the beginning of the war which ended when theUnited Statesblocked the Nez Perce’s epic retreat towards the Canadian border.
The crest is made up of fur, ermine tails and decorated bison horns.
The war shirt is made of decorated leather with yellow and red fabric, strips of porcupine quills and beads, tassels of horse hair and fur at the lower extremity.
The bison horn belonging to Husis Owyeen, the war whistle of the Peopeo Tholekt and theWinchesterrifle model 1866 were also used in the Nez Perce war.
A magnificent bow made with the horn of a mountain goat is placed in a case attached to the quiver, according to Crow customs.
