Another “first” took place in 1936: an international Jury. The festival’s prestige is consolidated through films by famed directors, such as Frank Capra (Mr Deeds goes to town), John Ford (Mary of Scotland), Max Ophüls (La tendre ennemie), René Clair (The ghost goes west), Josef von Sternberg (The king steps out), Marcel L’Herbier (Veille d’armes). However, Italian movie star Amedeo Nazzari achieved the most resounding success. The Mussolini Cup for best Italian film was awarded to Lo squadrone bianco by Augusto Genina, whereas Der Kaiser von Kalifornien, by Luis Trenker from South Tirol, received the award for best foreign film. The awards for best actor and actress go to Paul Muni for The story of Louis Pasteur, and Annabella, the leading role in Veille d’armes.
