Why has charity always been in vogue? It must be admitted that positive publicity is one motivating factor but for most famous folk, activism comes from the heart.
The earliest activist looked at their political engagements largely as an extension of their on-screen duties. When invited to appear at a relly or a public forum, they did little more than sparkle and sign autographs. Rarely did they offr their own views on matters of state. As late as the mid-1950s, with a few notable exceptions, Hollywood stars were used merely as decoration.
