THE ART OF DYEING/3

dyeing, color, print

The 18th cemtury technological revolution also had direct repercussions on dyeing processes.

At the end of the century cylindrical printing was introduced in England: first with just one color on wooden cylinders, but starting in 1815 with machinery with three copper cylinders which could print simultaneously.

In 1834 the Frenchman Louis Perrot invented the perrotine, which could print up to five different colors by means of wooden squares.

The result of all these innovations was the advent of a new production rhythm, and consequently new ways to use textiles and clothing: they were trasformed from precious goods into consumer goods, and fashions started to change much more frequently.
