During the period Hollywood’s major studios were producing all the important pictures. In the mid-50s a new breed of production company loomed on the scene – the independent. Overnight a new notion of shooting on location rather than in the studio took shape.
One of these independent companies was Aspen Productions, formed by directors Mark Robson and Robert Wise. Aspen’s first venture was RETURN TO PARADISE with Gary Cooper. The entire film was to be shot on lacation – in British Samoa, no less – before the age of jet travel. Aspen’s publicity man, Ted Loeff, knew that the future of this company was dependent upon the success of RETURN TO PARADISE and he also knew that none of the leading national magazines would assign a staffer to cover the filming.
