THE BIRTH OF MODERN DESIGN

While on the one hand the period around the end of the 19th and the beginnong of the 20th century represented the sum and decantation of the previous century’s moods, on the other it was the incubation of the most important changes characterizing the century to come.

It was in Paris end then in Venice between the two centuries that the Spaniard Mariano Fortuny lived and worked, the archetypical modern designer who, among his various activies, also devised original processes for printing and treating textiles.

In London in the 1880s, spurred by the architect William Morris, the “Art and Crafts Movement” came to life , with which one could date the birth of the modern concepts of applied arts and design of industrial products.
