MUSEUM

Turin’s “Pinacoteca Giovanni e Marella Agnelli” is going on until next August 29, a show that is truly not to be missed.

It is a large selection of works from an unconventional museum, rich of stimuli, both in content and in preparation, as few institutional spaces can be.

We are talking about the “Museum of Everything” inaugurated in London last year and already a pilgrimage destination for many among the best-known artists, critics, musicians and writers, who have often been asked to compare themselves through their work, with the works exhibited in this particular collection.

But what does a museum of all things actually contains?

Precisely that ensemble of paintings, sculptures, installations, books, puppets and artefacts that usually do not play a part of traditional museums or art galleries.

Namely “works of mediums, miners and mystics, self-taught, obsessive and visionary artists or craftsmen with disabilities who operate outside of conventional aesthetic norms “.

One among them is the Indian artist Nek Chand (1924), with a story behind him worthy of a fairy tale.

Modest transportation employee of the city of Chandigarh, in 1958 he began to realise some sculptures of humans and animals using materials from demolition scraps and construction sites.

All of his creations are secretly arranged and decorated in an abandoned area, a woodland and not building land which over time was improperly colonised by hundreds of his characters.

After fourteen years, the GOI casually discovered this illegal artistic site and instead of destroying it, fortunately decided to support and promote it, resulting in 1976 in giving life to the “Rock Garden” now a downright tourist attraction.
