On the one hand scientific progress begun in the 1600s and brought to full maturity, in particular regarding chemistry enabled principles and substances, which had up to then been applied intuitively, to te understood.

These concepts were conseguently modified and re-elaborated in the second half of the 18th century.

Over the course of the century knowledge increased of the constituent chemicals in dyes such as copper, while others, such as chromium, were isolated for the first time in 1797.
