Dyeing in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The discovery of new dyes.

Over the centuries the evolution of fashion was a result of a rather balanced mediation between cultural factors, such as the symbolism of color, and material imperatives, such as nature and the availability of raw materials as well as production techniques.

Starting in the second half of the 1700s, however, this balance began to vacillate on the wave of scientific discoveries and their practical application.

Two main factors provoked these changes: advances in chemical science and the industrial revolution.
