CHARITY – MOSAIC OF THE CENTRAL CUPOLA DATING BACK TO THE EARLY XIII CENTURY – CATHEDRAL OF SAINT MARK, VENICE
The concept of pomp in the early 13th century identifies with regal Byzantine tradition, as is apparent in this allegorical representation of Charity. She is depicted as Saint Basilissa, wearing a gem-studded miniakon and loros, however, the crown is no longer completed with pendants and the head is covered by a veil.
Actually Venice is no longer under imperial authority and this image may suggest that of a dogaress.
