In its second year, the festival already had its first scandal: during a sequence of Estasi, by Czechoslovakian director Gustav Machatý, Hedwig Kieslerová, later known as Hedy Lamarr, appears on the big screen fully nude.
From the third festival in 1935, it becomes an annual event, due to the great public and critic success garnered from the two previous festivals director by Ottavio Croze. Thanks to the festival’s increasing notoriety and prestige, the number of works submitted also increases as well as the countries which participate in the competition. However, from this festival until after the postwar period, Soviet films are no longer included, whereas the prestigious award for best actor is named the Volpi Cup, after the surname of Giuseppe Volpi of Misurata, the festival’s founder.
