V Century mosaic – Galla Placida, Ravenna
The two apostles are represented with the wide sleeved Dalmatica with two purple stripes and wearing a draped pallium on the left shoulder. The square Pallium was held in high regard amongst Christians as the preferred garment worn by philosophers and science men.
Tertullian dedicated an entire work to it: “De Pallio”. This meant that even after it fell into disuse it was still used in images of biblical characters, Christ and the apostles, as in the fifth century.
