THE GLOBE STORY/17

There are now over 200 publications on the market aimed at 12-to-17-year-old, adding names like YM, TWIST e JUMP.

Established magazines such as PEOPLE e COSMOPOLITAN have spawned TEEN PEOPLE e COSMO GIRL.

Teen publications may be the only other group of magazines able to make stars – only for a shorter duration than the movie magazines.

Adolescence is nothing if not fickle.

Not that the fan mags disappeared.

The general public’s new interest in the inner workings of teh entertainment industry that began in the seventies ballooned over the decade of the eighties and resulted in dozens of entertainment publications being founded on that interest (some have even lasted).

PEOPLE, ROLLING STONE, TV GUIDE, PREMIERE, the cheeky ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, MOVIELINE, e US, which rose from the ashes of PHOTOPLAY, became the new fan magazines.

And, with roots firmly planted in CONFIDENTIAL dirt, the supermarket tabloids becama and have remained the circulation champs.

Even publication that once expressed only a passing interest in Hollywood goings-on, like THE NEW YORKER and VANITY FAIR, now feature regular coverage of not only the stars, but the moviemarkers and studio bosses as well.

And they all still need pictures.
