The date layout was born in the late 1940s in the fan magazines, sired by major studios that in those days told – didn’t ask – their contract players what they would do for publicity.

They were cotton candy layouts that paired attractive young people in quasi-romantic situations, usually focusing on one couple but sometimes on a group, always evenly matched boy/girl.
