THE ANGEL RAPHAEL – DETAIL OF THE FRESCOES DATING TO THE XI CENTURY – SANT’ANGELO IN FORMIS

In the region of Campania the Byzantine tradition lives on, as is shown in the apparel of the angel Raphael with the mantel open on the side, adorned with jeweled ornaments around the neckline and at the corners.

The surcoat, with its slightly flared sleeves folded back, allows the viewer to glimpse the ornaments adorning the wrist and the lower corner of the tunic.
