  The Ute cradles were made out of wood planks covered with skins (in this case a deerskin painted yellow), whereas the wickerwork hood protected the child’s head. The beaded decoration is very striking.

Powell collected this female garment in Utah in 1874. It is made of two skins and is decorated with beads and wapiti teeth. Classified as belonging to the Southern Paiute, it is instead typical of the Ute of this time period.
