ST. BENEDICT AND THEOBALD THE ABBOT – MINIATURE OF THE CASSINESE CODE N.73 – DATABLE BETWEEN 1022 AND 1035 – ABBAZIA DI MONTECASSINO

The abbot and the Saint are wearing identical apparel which mirrors the disposition of the Regula of Saint Benedict: dark cowl (cucullum), manilla tinted scapular and under this a white tunic; stockings (caligas) on their legs and rope-soled walking shoes (pedules); when monks went out they also wore short trousers (femoralia) under their tunics.
