SHOE OF HENRY VI KING OF SICILY – DATING PRIOR TO 1197 (FROM A PAINTING OF “THE GIFT SEPULCHRES OF THE DUOMO OF PALERMO RECOGNIZED AND ILLUSTRATED”; FRANCESCO DANIELE, NAPLES 1794).
The shoe of Henry VI (who died in 1197), which is kept in the king’s sepulchral sarcophagus was diligently replicated to celebrate the examination of the king’s body in 1781. Hence we have an exact replica of period courtly footwear, which was evidently inspired by imperial footwear during the Byzantine era, both in its shape which is closed at the ankle, as well as in the elegant sobriety of the embroidery with which it is decorated.
