  It is a house scarf, perfect for persons who are convalescing. It is wrapped around the neck twice, like the old Ascots, thus effectively protecting the neck from draughts. It’s even better if, under the dressing gown or jacket, one tucks the scarf ends into a sweater or vest.

    FASHION

  It does not protect you from the cold, but rather from the heat. Locomotive and engine room stokers used it to have a cloth on hand with which they could wipe away sweat.
