PEARL BAG

Pearl decorations on a feminine bag, probably the workmanship of Nez Percè, from the 1980s.  The figure portrays a butterfly, the triangle centre motif: the cocoon.  The metamorphoses were a widely recognisable phenomenon in all of North America, and were symbolically associated with renovation and regeneration.

Around 1860, non-linear decorations were very popular.

Abstract yet rich in colour and symmetry, floral designs, were done on a subtle coloured background.

The background was also decorated with strings of small pearls, which followed the outlines of the curvy patterns, filling in spaces.

By the end of the century, very realistic floral decorations and animal figures were predominate.

The Transmountian style (because it was developed on both sides of the Rocky Mountains) was introduced, rather. ambiguity of optical perception, which is actually difficult to distinguish from the bottom, the elements of design.
