DETAIL OF THE CRUCIFIXION – FRESCO DATED AFTER 741 – CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA ANTIQUA, ROME
The short male tunic, which is still worn in Italy and particularly in Rome, is purely byzantine in nature due to its ornaments: a wide band of embroidery which adorns the central part in the front (paragauda) and the trim at the wrists (segmenta).
Even the hairstyle with the hair cut in a circle, which had been adopted by some of the Germanic population as well, deviates sharply from the Lombard custom of wearing the hair long, droopy; while from the Lombards themselves derives the cut of the pointed beard: on their feet footwear reaching to ankle.
