THE GLOBE STORY/9
For millions of Americans the “fan mags”, as they were called, were an important appendix to the movies.
Their features enhanced the studio image of what heaven our lives could be if we were rich, famous, beautiful and loved.
Movie magazines then were love letters not expose sheets and they were wooed by the studios.
Movie magazine readers were considered the opinion leaders among moviegoers and thus deemed able to make or break a film at the box office.
And they could make stars – of a very durable kind.
They were unparalleled in that particular area.
They also dispensed Hollywood news of a sort, although on a monthly not daily basis.
Shirley MacLaine once said, ” Don’t knock the fan magazines . They’re what I read when I want to find out what’s happening”.
Indeed, the fan books were becoming so much a part of the Hollywood scene that no one blinked when PHOTOPLAY picked up the tab for the honeymoon of Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh which they ran as an exclusive feature.
