A pair of moccasins collected at Hidatsa at the beginning of our century by anthropologist Gilbert Wilson, who was able to avail himself of the collaboration of the elders in the transcribing of the tribe’s history and customs.
The disks on the uppers made with porcupine spines are in ancient Hidatsa style: and are reminiscent of a pattern that appears on the war crest which symbolizes the Sun’s power.
The beaded decoration on the lower edge of the upper reveals the passage of the working of the spines to that of the beads, even though the Hidatsa continued to use spines up to the 20th century.
