HAIDA

The populations traditionally lived in numerous villages along the coast and the rivers inland.

Often the large and extended families dwelt together in longhouses, lined up on the beach.

The villages, of a permanent nature, where inhabited for generations or even longer.

People would depart only for hunting and fishing, commerce, social activities and military incursions.

The village constituted the highest political unit and its inhabitants identified themselves particularly with the community chiefs.

From the sea came not only food, but also materials used for manufacturing clothing and instruments: pelts of marine mammals, bones, bladders and tendons.

The women used the inner bark and the roots of the cedar and the fir to weave baskets, caps, mats and ropes.
