GROUP OF MILITIA – FRESCO DATED END OF IX CENTURY – CHURCH OF SAINT MARY IN SECUNDICERIO (ALREADY KNOWN AS THE TEMPLE OF THE FORTUNA VIRILE), ROME
Interesting depiction of a warrior’s garb.
The militiaman to the right holds a round shield and has a helmet with a neck roll, breastplate made of metal scales over a short tunic; the other militiaman appears to be wearing, over his breastplate, a white surcoat with a bandoleer which covers also the helmet with a hood.
Both wear tight trousers (the anaxyrides sort) and on their feet closed climbing shoes.
