Of all the photographic coverage of Hollywood stars of the 1930s and 40s, perhaps the most representative as well as the best remembered comes under the heading of “glamour” photography. Hollywood glamour photography was exclusively about creating illusion in those days. Shot in still galleries, it paid strict attention to posed formality. The meticulosly made up actresses were carefully lighted, the frames perfectly composed, and should there be even the most minute imperfection, the resulting photographs were turned over to the retoucher before being released to publications.
