Gerhard Richter (Dresden, February 9, 1932) is a German painter.
Born in Dresden, Germany February 9, 1932. He grew up in the countryside of Upper Lusatia (Oberlausitz). He quit school at 16 years of age and began working as an apprentice in the advertising field, and as a painter of theater sets to then return to studying at the Dresden Academy of Arts. Initially Richter taught as a temporary professor at Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, to then become a tenured professor at the Academy of Arts in in Düsseldorf in 1971. In 1983, Richter transferred from Düsseldorf to Cologne where he still lives.
