BYZANTINE CLOTH FRAGMENT WITH LIONS FACING THE TREE OF LIFE – DATED AT X CENTURY (?) – SACRED VATICAN MUSEUM
In the Ottonian time period we have some information regarding the cultivation of silk and silk weaving in Italy, however the most prized silk cloths continue to arrive from Byzantium.
Unfortunately, the specimens which we have received are rare and of dubious dating.
Nevertheless, this fragment of byzantine silk cloth of great refinement, due to the elegance in design and the sobriety in colour, may be attributed to the X century; the elaborately drawn yellow lions stand out against the red background.
In the circle which frames the depiction the colours are inverted: red palmettoes against a yellow background.
