In 1960 La dolce vita, film/symbol for nearly a decade, offered the splendid and disenchanted vision of an Italian amorality: the vulgarity of the new wealthy and the extinction of an old aristocracy into futility, the degeneration of a religious faith into a spectacular superstition, the aggressive brutality of a cannibalistic journalism, the suicide of intellectuality, the absence of thought and the dryness of love expressed themselves in a powerful style and were the emblem of a moment of our social history.
