FEDERICO FELLINI – DIARY/1

film diary, paper

During the making of a film, Fellini keeps a very unique diary, jotting down his doubts, ideas and experiences.

He writes on loose sheets of paper which he almost always immediately rips, throws away, forgets. Whoever has managed to take them away and get ahold of them will come across comments such as the following.

Today Benigni’s audition. He sits cheerfully, cooperatively, gratefully, in front of the mirror and makes faces.

“Such gratification”, he keeps saying: he says it almost for the entire time and so many times that I thought: maybe he’s making fun of me. I also look at him in the mirror, and I look as myself: so I’ve decided, I picked him. After all he came about with the film, or rather the film came about because I thought of him and Paolo.
