She moved to Londonin 1913 to care for orphan children and here she met count William de Wendt de Kerlor, whom she married in the beginning of 1914. In1919 the couple moved to New Yorkand in 1920 their daughter was born, whom they named Gogo. However their marriage failed and Schiaparelli found herself alone with her daughter, who caught polio and, shortly thereafter, her father died as well. Nevertheless, it was during this time that Schiaparelli became acquainted with and started associating with avant-garde Dadaist artists, who had also settled inNew York: Man Ray, Baron de Meyer, Alfred Stieglitz and Marcel Duchamp, whom she would involve in styling her collections. During this time, due to her daughter’s health condition, Elsa moved toParis in 1922, where she stayed with Gaby Picabia, the mother of Dadaist artist Francis Picabia.
