DISCOVERY OF THE RELIC OF SAINT MARK (DETAIL – MOSAIC DATING BACK TO CIRCA 1270 – BASILICA OF SAINT MARK, VENICE
The wealth of the city of Venice is reflected in the elegance of its women.
The white tunics are embellished with golden belts with a long pendant and gem-studded embroideries decorate the sleeves.
The mantels are lined with ermine, and the small black tails stand out against the brilliant whiteness of the fur.
Higher-ranking ladies wear gem-studded crowns or pearl wreaths; the others don a white linen cloth which completely covers their hair.
Interestingly, the little girl’s apparel is a miniature copy of that of the adult women.
