CINDY SHERMAN

Never refer to her as a photographer.  She prefers the definition of “performative artist”: her shots document performances that have a life of their own.  Actually, in those shots, Sherman captures that tradition of changing identity which was inaugurated by Marcel Duchamp. Offering herself as a mirror to her contemporaries, this 57 year old American artist analyzes appearance and gender concepts dictated by the media. The result?  Cindy Sherman is adored by fashion’s most intellectual representatives, like Comme des Garcons, Marc Jacobs and Juerger Teller. What can you say? If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.
