CATTURA DI NAPO DELLA TORRE – PART. OF FRESCO, DATABLE TO THE 13th CENTURY– ROCCA VISCONTEA, ANGERA
Napo della Torre, Lord of Milan from 1265 to 1277, is described by historian Giovio in “crimson clothing” in the day of his captivity.
The red actually, is a sign of power, but here it is portrayed in a rich, embroidered coat; he is still wearing the round– cap of earthenware – helmet, but he is disarmed.
The military men of Ottone Visconti however, are armed with large swords with a straight handle with a knob, which, for knights, as Dante reminds us, was made of gold.
You can see images of the Visconti’s endeavors (the snake, the cross) on the shields.
