Western Arizona (Fort Apache Reserve) Apache Woman carrying a baby in a cradle on her back, taken around 1907.
You can see that her hair is unusually short: she had probably cut it a few months earlier in mourning the death of a close relative.
The cradle is made of wooden slats which support the baby and overlap a vertical structure, while the frontal protection is assured by a series of osiers.
