In the 1920s and early 1930s Hollywood publicity mills emphasized disparities between stars and audience.

Photographs released by the studios to magazines tended to distance the readership from the celebrity to preserve an aura of mystery and awe.

By the 1940s, due in part to the rise in the number of general interest and fan magazines, studios and press began to emphasize quite a different publicity convention: Hollywwod as just another American town, its citizens espousing the American virtues.
