SAINT MARTIN BESTOWS HIS MANTLE – MINIATURE OF THE COD. LXXXVI, MISSAL OF THE BLESSED WARMONDO, DATED 969-1002 – CAPITOLARE LIBRARY, IVREA
During the general economic depression of the tenth century, the poor often only had a torn tunic with which to cover his nakedness, while the rich, besides possessing a tunic, had long breeches, calcei (footwear which covered the entire foot) and a large mantle.
Here the Saint, in a fit of generosity, divides his mantle in half, mindful of the Gospel precept:
To clothe the naked.
