BRIGHT

Bright Star, Jane Campion’s new tender and heartbreaking film debuted in our cinemas in June.  The title is taken form a sonnet of the romantic English poet John Keats, who died in Rome in 1821 were he had gone to spend the winter in an attempt to overcome consumption.  Despite at the time he was only 25 years old, the poems that he was able to write were enough to make him one of England’s most important poets.  The film speaks of his troubled and eternal love for his neighbour Fanny Brawne.  It is on the poet’s muse, a fashion student, who produces charming clothing and for this, in the beginning, seems frivolous and superficial to Keats, that the New Zealand director seems to concentrate, who in all of her films has always demonstrated a preference for the sentimental universe and the woman’s secret.  The costumes designed by Janet Patterson are gorgeous, who for this effort was nominated for an Oscar and admirable as is all of the photography of the opening image, with the oversized detail of the needle which pierces the fabric and of the patient hand which is sewing.
