In 1962 Yves Saint Laurent left Dior and established his own label (Yves Saint Laurent, often abbreviated as YSL) together with his associate and companion Pierre Bergé.
The brand enjoyed maximum prestige during the 1970s, thanks to ingenious fashion innovations. In 1980 he was the first living fashion creator to enjoy a large retrospect of his work at the New York Metropolitan Museum. In 1989 the YSL group listed their stocks on the market to then be sold in 1993 to the pharmaceutical company Sanofi for nearly 600 million dollars. In 1999 the Florentine fashion house Gucci bought the label while Tom Ford handled the prêt-à-porter collection (more accessible to a wider public), Yves Saint-Laurent designed the high fashion lines.
