MOHAWK
Mohawk Warrior, 1750
A running Mohawk warrior passes a tree on which there is a pictograph testimony of war.
He’s holding an English rifle and a metal tomahawk decorated with tufts of scalp on one end.
The powder horn is French and is worn over a wool bag that is beaded, as are his belt and the garters.
The sheath of the knife and the black buckskin moccasins are decorated with porcupine spines.
He’s wearing a buckskin loincloth and beaded chaps.
He’s wearing a medal of George I around his neck.
His clothing, the ornaments and weapons are very similar to those collected by George Townshend and engraved on two Indian supports of the monument to his son, Lieutenant Colonel Roger Townshend, which stands in the Westminster Abbey.
