THE DEPARTURE OF JACOB – MOSAIC DATABLE TO 1172-1174 – CATHEDRAL, MONREALE
This is a beautiful example of XII century masculine apparel with some elements of classical tradition and others of oriental origin.
A wide chlamys fastened on the right shoulder, skirt with vitta, that is a scarf over the waist, and a girdle at the hip, a tunic with very narrow sleeves of which we may glimpse only the wrist, tight anaxyrides (oriental style breeches), high footwear fastened with bands.
Very interesting feminine apparel as well: a cassock tunic, a second shorter sleeveless tunic which is raised at the waist, a veil studded with gems and decorated with gold wrapped around the head.
